titleOfInvention | Nitrogen-containing condensation polymers |
abstract | A linear condensation polymer comprises hydantoin nuclei linked alternately by a methylene radical attached to the 1,11-N-atoms of two successive hydantoin nuclei, and by an organic radical attached to the 3,31-N-atoms of two successive hydantoin nuclei. The polymer may have recurring units of formula <FORM:1003801/C3/1> where R and R1 are alkyl radicals which may have polar substituents which do not react with formaldehyde or R and R1 together with the 5-C-atom form a five- or six-membered saturated hydrocarbon or heterocyclic ring, and Y is a radical or formula <FORM:1003801/C3/2> where Z1 and Z2 are hydrogen atoms or monovalen organic radicals free of substituents that are reactive to hydantoin-ring nitrogen or to formaldehyde, and Z3 is a divalent organic radical also free of such substituents, or Z1 and Z2 together represent a divalent radical free of such substituents. The polymers may be prepared (1) by condensing a hydantoin with formaldehyde, followed by the condensation of the resulting 1,11-methylene bis-hydantoin with a dihalo compound wherein both halogen atoms are attached to aliphatic carbon atoms; or (2) by reacting the dihalo compound with the hydantoin and subsequently reacting the 3,31-bis-hydantoin product of this reaction with formaldehyde. In examples, polymers are obtained by reacting 5,5-dimethylhydantoin with methylene chloride, with 1,4-dichlorobutane, with bis-(2-chloroethoxy)-ethane, a ,a 1-di-chloro-p-xylene and with 1,2-dichloroethane, and then reacting the products with formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde; polymers also are obtained by reacting 5,5-dimethylhydantoin with formaldehyde to obtain 1,11-methylene-bis-(5,5-dimethylhydantoin), and then reacting this with 1,4-dichlorobutane. |
