titleOfInvention A process for the production of n-methylol methacrylamide thioethers
abstract Methacrylamide - N - methylol thioethers of the formula <FORM:1003348/C2/1> where R is hydrogen or C1 to C8 alkyl and Ry is an alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical, are made by heating, preferably in the presence of an acidic etherification catalyst, a mercaptan Ry S.H (Ry as above defined) and a methacylamide -N-methylol ether <FORM:1003348/C2/2> (R as above defined) and Rx is a C1 to C4 alkyl, a cycloalkyl or an aralkyl radical, the alcohol RxOH that is split off having a lower boiling point than the mercaptan RySH. A polymerization inhibitor, e.g. phenthiazine, hydroquinone or copper oleate may be present, and the reaction may be performed in a solvent e.g. chlorobenzene, toluene or xylene. Thioglycollic acid and mercaptoethanol are said also to be suitable starting material for the process. In the examples syntheses of compounds wherein Ry is dodecyl, hydroxyethyl, benzthiazolyl and benzimidazolyl residues are described.
