titleOfInvention Electrolytic recording medium
abstract An electrolytic recording medium comprises a porous support, e.g. of paper, impregnated with a solution containing a substantially colourless metal salt, a polyhydroxy phenolic compound, an electrolyte and a metal bisulphite. The metal salt is of a metal which is oxidisable to a higher oxidation state during the passage of an electric current, and is capable in its higher oxidation state of reacting with the polyhydroxy-phenolic compound to form a coloured mark in the medium. Suitable salts are those of divalent manganese, divalent cobalt, divalent nickel, trivalent chromium, monovalent silver, divalent tin, divalent lead, monovalent thallium or trivalent vanadium, e.g. manganous chloride. Suitable polyhydroxyphenolic compounds are gallic acid, catechol, pyrogalloc, hydroquinone and genticic acid. The electrolyte may be sodium chloride, sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate. The bisulphite or sodium, potassium or lithium bisulphite or sodium metabisulphite. The solution may also contain: a base, e.g. sodium hydroxide, to control the pH to between 2.5 and 8.5; an agent to terminate the free-radical degradation of the polyhydroxy phenolic compound, e.g. thiourea, an alkyl derivative of thiourea, dithiobiuret, hydrogine or a salt thereof, hydroxylamine or a salt thereof; and antifringing agents and buffers, e.g. citric acid or monosodium phosphate. The Specification also describes for purposes of comparison media in which the solution contains no bisulphite and no stabilizer (Example 2), or thiourea as the only stabilizer (Example 3).
