A lubricating composition comprises a major proportion of a base oil which is a mixture of, by weight, 60-80% di-(2-ethyl hexyl) azelate, 15-35% di-(isodecyl) azelate, and 0.1-5% of petroleum-based tricresyl phosphate. Other constituents in the composition may be a glycol titanate (used as a catalyst in the preparation of the esters and left in the finished product as a load carrier); methacrylate-pyrrolidone copolymers, e.g. a solution in di-(2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate of a copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone with a mixture of stearyl, lauryl and butyl methacrylates; a free C6-14 non-aromatic dicarboxylic acid, e.g. adipic, pimelic, suberic, azelaic, or sebacic acid; an antioxidant, e.g. phenothiazine, 2,6-di tert-butyl a -dimethylamino-p-cresol, or a mixture thereof; and a di-(lower alkyl) silicone, e.g. dimethyl, diethyl, methyl ethyl or methylpentyl silicone. |
