titleOfInvention Polyester resin compositions and fiber-reinforced plastic articles
abstract A fluid composition polymerizable to an infusible resin comprises a solution of isotactic polymethylmethacrylate of viscosity average molecular weight at least 1000 and an ethylenically unsaturated polyester in an addition copolymerizable monomer. The solution may also contain a syndiotactic polymethyl methacrylate which on standing reacts with the isotactic polymer to form a gel. Specified solvent monomers are styrene; p-methylstyrene; various acrylates and methacrylates; divinyl benzene; diallyl phthalate, succinate, adipate and fumarate; allyl glycolyl allyl succinate; triallyl phosphate and mixtures thereof. The polyesters may be derived by condensation of an unsaturated di- or tri-carboxylic acid and a dihydric alcohol and, optionally other polycarboxylic acids, monocarboxylic acids and monohydric alcohols, several examples of each category being given. The solution generally contains an inhibitor, e.g. hydroquinone, beta-naphthol, phenylene diamine, resorcinol, catechol or an alkylated catechol. Polymerization may be effected by benzoyl, acetyl, lauroyl or MEK peroxide, t-butyl or cumene hydroperoxide or butyl perbenzoate and an activator, e.g. an amine or polyamine or a cobalt soap. Optional ingredients of the solution specified are atactic acrylate and methacrylate polymers and copolymers, fatty acids, C12+ alcohols, lecithin, salol, dyes, pigments, fillers and wax. The solutions may be applied to mats of woven or non-woven glass, cellulose, polyester, polyamide or other natural or synthetic fibres.
