titleOfInvention | Method of testing terephthalic acid to be converted into polyethylene terephthalate |
abstract | A batch of terephthalic acid is tested to determine its suitability for conversion into polyethylene terephthalate by converting a small portion of the batch of dry weight W to its normal barium salt, ascertaining the dry weight A of the barium salt thus obtained, calculating the purity of the batch from the formula Purity (%) = A x 0.551 x 100/W + correction factor, where the correction factor = 100 - A1 x 0.551 x 100/W1 where W1 is the dry weight of a portion of pure terephthalic acid and A1 is the dry weight of the normal barium salt of said portion of pure terephthalic and rejecting the batch if its purity is thus found to be less than 99%. Terephthalic acid of suitable purity may be made by the process of Specification 825,375. The purified terephthalic acid may be converted into polyethylene terephthalate by esterifying it under pressure with ethylene glycol in the presence of titanium dioxide and cobaltous acetate and polymerizing the product in the presence of antimony oxide and phosphorous acid. Specifications 747,204 and 825,375 are referred to.ALSO:A batch of terephthalic acid is tested to determine its purity by converting a small portion of the batch of dry weight W to its normal barium salt, ascertaining the dry weight A of the barium salt thus obtained and calculating the purity from the formula:- <FORM:1000488/B1-B2/1> where W1 is the dry weight of a portion of pure terephthalic acid and A1 is the dry weight of the normal barium salt of said portion of pure terephthalic acid. If the purity is 99% or more the batch is converted to polyethylene terephthalate (see Division C3). The barium salt is made by dissolving the terephthalic acid in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and precipitating the salt by adding an aqueous solution of barium acetate and acetic acid. Specifications 747,204 and 825,375 are referred to. |
