titleOfInvention | Polymerization of unsaturated aliphatic compounds with group ch2 = c < |
abstract | Polymers of unsaturated aliphatic monomers containing a vinylidene group are made by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of a catalyst formed by mixing together a vanadium compound and an addition compound of an aluminium alkyl with a diisopropyl ether. The addition compound may be preformed or added to the mixture of the vanadium compound and aluminium alkyl. The catalyst may be absorbed on to an inert finely-divided filler material. The vanadium compound may be vanadium trichloride or oxytrichloride. The aluminium compound is preferably tri-ethyl tri-isopropyl, tri-isobutyl, or tri-octyl aluminium. The inert filler may be silica, carbon black, or cryolite. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon medium. Specified monomers are butadiene, isoprene, ethylene, propylene, and butene-1. |
