abstract A fast neutron reactor with a core containing low-temperature fuel elements of nominal operation, and preferably of small diameter, and a moderating material. This reactor comprises a core which comprises fuel assemblies (8) and at least one moderator material, each fuel assembly comprising cylindrical fuel elements (18), preferably based on a mixture of uranium oxide and oxide of plutonium. According to the invention, the fuel elements (18) are configured to operate at a nominal maximum operating temperature TN which is less than or equal to 2/3 of the TF fuel melting temperature.
