abstract |
The invention relates to thermal energy storage systems comprising a thermal energy storage device which stores thermal energy by creating a mobile thermocline. The thermal energy storage device may include multiple channels (105) formed by a thermal energy storage medium. A thermocline can be formed in each of the multiple channels. In addition, the system may include one or more superheat amplifiers coupled to a heat exchanger for charging one or more thermal energy storage device (s). Thermal energy storage devices can be used to preheat or overheat a working fluid. The heated working fluid can be used by a condensing turbine and a non-condensing turbine to generate electricity. The non-condensing turbine can reduce the pressure of the working fluid to thereby allow the fluid to be heated to a higher temperature to charge the thermal energy storage device. |
