titleOfInvention MEASUREMENT OF NITROGEN OXIDE ATMOSPHERIC CONTENT USING LICHENS AS ASSAY MATERIAL
abstract The present invention relates to the technical field of air quality. The invention applies to the atmospheric contents of nitrogen oxides. The invention resides in the use of lichens as a diagnostic and monitoring tool for atmospheric nitrogen oxide contents, whether these lichens grow naturally, or whether they are used after transplants or culture. It concerns any species of lichen growing on the soil or on vertical or horizontal supports. The process is based on the sensitivity of the species to nitrogen oxides, the most sensitive (level 5, then 4) gradually disappearing in favor of tolerant species (level 2 then 1). Examination of the flora must use precautions to eliminate interference from dust and fertilizers. The surveys are carried out on trees with a circumference greater than 30 cm, from 0.70 m to 2 m in height over the entire surface of the trunk. A species is significantly present as soon as its frequency exceeds 30%. The use of the process must not use less than 50 flora readings to allow interpretation and cartographic representation. The technique can be carried out in all cases where nitrogen oxide emissions are known or assumed.
