titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF VINYLIDENE FLUORIDE POLYMER
abstract The invention is a discontinuous or semi-continuous process for the manufacture of a VDF copolymer comprising by weight 95 to 99.9% of VDF for respectively 5 to 0.1% of at least one fluorinated comonomer in which: a dispersion of VDF (vinylidene fluoride) in water, optionally using a dispersing additive, said dispersion being initially brought into contact with an organosoluble initiator capable of causing the polymerization of the monomers, • optionally continuing to add VDF, • the comonomer is introduced either in the initial dispersion of VDF or during the polymerization or partly in the initial dispersion and partly during the polymerization, • then after having polymerized at least 50% of the VDF required to form all the PVDF, most of the chain transfer agent (CTA) is added, • the remainder of the VDF is polymerized, • the PVDF is separated by any means from the water and any residues of the reactants involved. The proportion of copolymer is known sufficiently low so that the polymer retains the properties of a homopolymer PVDF, that is to say the melting point, the enthalpy of fusion, the mechanical rigidity and the resistance to creep. In addition, this process is very simple and does not require the use of additives which may contaminate the PVDF. The invention also relates to the process described above in which, at the end of the polymerization, the PVDF is collected in the form of a latex, or of a coagulated latex, or of an aerated cream less dense than water formed from a coagulated latex, to be then directly dried by putting it in contact with a hot gas in an atomizer without have previously washed it with deionized water.
