An agent for complexing cations comprises at least one p-isopropyl-calixarene of formula (I). n = 4-14; X = CH2 (or other alkylene), C, O or C(O); R = (i) H; (ii) alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl (all linear, branched or cyclic); (iii) aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl, aralkenyl, alkenylaryl, aralkynyl or alkynylaryl; (iv) -Y-C(O)-OR1; (v) -C(O)-R2; (vi) -Z-C(O)-R3; or (vii) -W-N(R5)2; R1 = as R (i)-(iii); R2 = as R1 (i)-(iv); R3 = as R1 (i)-(v), amino (specifically N(R4)2) or polycycloalkyl; R4 = H or alkyl; R5 = H or hydrocarbyl (optionally containing one or more heteroatoms, specifically N, O or S); Y, Z, W = divalent hydrocarbyl. Independent claims are included for: (a) an accelerator for the polymerization of acrylates comprising at least one compound (I); (b) a method for the preparation of p-isopropyl-calixarenes (I'); and (c) an anionic and/or radical method for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, involving reacting the monomers in presence of at least one weak base (possibly in the form of anions present on the surface of substrates to be adhered) and (I)/(I'). |
