abstract | A process for the production of xylenes and in particular paraxylene is described, in which (2) a hydrocarbon charge is reformed, the reformate is distilled (8) at least once; the mixture of C8 aromatic isomers is separated by distillation (11) and a residue (13) enriched in xylenes and in particular paraxylene is collected. The distillate (line 12) containing mostly ethylbenzene and minor meta- and para-xylene is hydrogenated (23) then isomerized (24). The isomerate is distilled (26) to obtain a distillate (27) containing 1, 3 and 1, 4-dimethylcyclohexane which is recycled to the reforming reactor (2) while the residue (28) from distillation (26) containing ethylcyclohexane and 1,2 dimethylcyclohexane is recycled to the isomerization (24). Application to the synthesis of terephthalic acid. |
