abstract A method of making a transparent polymeric material having a low tendency for deposit buildup. The method of the invention comprises immersing a transparent polymer matrix in a solution in a polymer matrix swelling solvent of a composition comprising a polymerizable zwitterionic monomer and a monomer crosslinking agent for swelling and impregnating the polymer matrix with the composition, optionally removing the matrix from solution, and hardening the impregnated composition within the matrix, said hardening being carried out in the presence of a polymerization initiator initially present in the matrix or the swelling solution. Application: in the manufacture of contact lenses and intraocular implants.
