abstract The fuel rod (1) comprises a tubular sheath (2), a plurality of pellets of nuclear fuel material (4) stacked in the form of a column of fuel pellets in the axial direction inside the sheath ( 2), a closure plug (3) at each end of the sheath (2) and a spring for holding the column of fuel pellets (4). The sheath (2), which is sealed by the plugs (3) contains a filling gas under pressure such as helium. The fuel rod (1) comprises a capsule (5) contained inside the sheath (2) whose wall delimits a chamber (6) whose internal pressure is lower than the pressure of the gas contained in the sheath (2 ). The capsule (5) comprising a destructible part (8) such as a rupture disc ensures an increase in the volume of expansion of the gas contained in the fuel rod, when the pressure of this gas reaches a predetermined value and improve the behavior of the fuel rod until end of life.
