Switching circuits (21-24) are provided to select whether to apply DAT2 or DAT5 video data to a letterbox converting circuit (20) before or after storing the video data in memory. 'image (14A). Decoded image data of a B-image is divided into m logical groups (m> = 2), which data is temporarily stored in p physical groups (2 <= p <m) preserved in the image memory (14A ) and are read in for display. When reproducing at X2 speed at a speed which is twice as fast as a normal speed, a decoder circuit (27A) decodes the DATO encoded picture data and stores the DAT2 data in an all picture memory. by reading reference image data DAT4 in the image memory and at the normal speed, it reads decoded image data DAT5 in the image memory while performing a jump every two images. |
