abstract The invention relates to a process for the oxidation of a plutonium-based material by combustion in which the plutonium-based material is in a form, defined by its surface mass (Mass / Surface exposed to the air flow), such that the combustion time of said plutonium-based material is less than or equal to 3 hours. The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method, in which the crucible receiving the plutonium-based material is made of silica or of ceramics and in which the confinement enclosure intended to confine the liquid plutonium in the event of casting to a sandwich structure with for example a tantalum sheet (23) inserted between two stainless steel sheets (21, 22) welded (24) together.
