abstract The invention relates to a process for producing filaments from a resinous organosilicon polymer, said process characterized by comprising the steps of preparing a molten resinous organosilicon polymer (10); melt spinning (at 12) said molten polymer to form a plurality of filaments (16); rapidly hardening (at 19, 24) at least the outer surfaces of said filaments; continuously gathering (at 30, 34) said filaments into a tow of fibers; and continuously pyrolyzing said fiber tow as it exits the gathering step. Use of filaments and fibers derived from them to manufacture composite materials.
