The pyrotechnic generator comprises a granular and porous pyrotechnic charge (2) confined within a cylindrical body (1). The charge comprises at least one zone (4) of substantially inert material extending over the entire cross section of the charge, the distance (d) between the end of the charge (2) adjacent to the ignition means (3) and said zone (4) being determined so that when the complete combustion front reaches this zone (4) the combustion rate is still in the range of the deflagrating regime.
