abstract The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of dimethyldichlorosilane by reaction of methyl chloride on a solid contact mass formed of silicon and of a catalyst comprising (a) metallic copper or a compound based on copper and (beta) a system promoter comprising: - 10 to 1000 ppm (calculated by weight of tin and/or antimony metal relative to the mass of silicon involved) of a beta1 additive consisting of at least one metal chosen from tin and antimony or at least one compound based on tin and/or antimony, - 0 to 3% by weight (calculated as zinc metal relative to the mass of silicon involved) of an optional beta2 additive consisting of metallic zinc or a zinc-based compound, said method being characterized in that the promoter system (beta) additionally contains 0.01 to 2% by weight (calculated as metallic lanthanide with respect to the mass of silicon involved) of a complementary beta3 additive consisting of at least one compound with lanthanide base, and optionally 0.05 to 2% by weight (calculated as alkali metal relative to the mass of silicon) of a second complementary additive beta4 consisting of at least one alkali metal chosen from Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs or at least one compound of said alkali metal. By implementing the process of the invention, the selectivity for dimethyldichlorosilane is notably improved.
