titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF MONOMETHYLHYDRAZINE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION.
abstract The present invention relates to a process for the synthesis of monomethylhydrazine in aqueous solution by reacting, for a period D1, in aqueous medium and under an oxygen-free atmosphere, of monochloramine with a molar excess of monomethylamine in the presence of a strong base. The reaction medium is then heated, under an oxygen-free atmosphere, between 30 and 100 degrees C, for a period of time D2 such that D2 / D1 is greater than 10, while maintaining the pH greater than 13.5, so as in particular to eliminate methyldiazene, a particular explosive and dangerous by-product. The reaction medium is then purified and concentrated, so as to obtain a concentrated aqueous solution of monomethylhydrazine. The elimination of methyldiazene considerably improves the operating conditions and the safety of implementation of the process. Monomethylhydrazine is used in particular as a synthetic intermediate and as an oxidizer for rocket engines.
