titleOfInvention | SURBASIC ALKALINE METAL SULFONATES |
abstract | To prepare an overbased alkali metal carbonate sulfonate, (1) mixing an alkali metal compound, a lower molecular weight alkanol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a diluent, a solvent, and a sulfonate compound; (2) this mixture is heated to at least 104 degree (s) C for a time sufficient to remove substantially all of the alkanol and the solvent which is removed together with the alkanol is replaced; (3) this heated mixture is carbonated to at least 104 degree (s) C to form a carbonate product comprising the overbased alkali metal sulfonate while removing the water of reaction as it is formed; (4) the carbonate product is heated to a temperature between 116 degree (s) C and 177 degree (s) C to remove all water of reaction; and (5) treating this carbonate product to remove solids and residual solvent. |
