abstract Method for determining an octane number of a fuel with several constituents, consisting in measuring by means of a near infrared spectrophotometer the absorbance for a certain number of frequencies in the spectral region 12500-3840 cm ** - * * 1 (0.8 to 2.6 microns) on the constituents or on arbitrary mixtures and to determine for each constituent a certain spectral mixing index IMS by applying a correlative relationship with the measured absorbance values Di , this correlation being determined experimentally by multivariate regression and calculating the desired octane number by means of a linear relationship in which each term 10 = Fa .IMSa + fb .IMSb + fc .IMSc. ... + fO .IMSO is the product of the spectral mixing index (IMSa ...) of a component (A ...) by the volume fraction (fa ...) of this component.
