IN THE SEARCH FOR MAXIMUM ACTIVITY OF MICRO-ORGANISMS, IN PARTICULAR, TO OBTAIN EXCELLENT YIELDS FROM BIOREACTIONS, TWO CONTRADICTORY REQUIREMENTS MUST BE FULFILLED: IT IS DESIRABLE TO CONFINURE THE MICRO-ORGANISM TO AVOID CONTAMINATION OF THE SUBSTRATES AND PRODUCTS THIS CONTAINMENT EXERCISES AN ADVERSE EFFECT ON THE REACTION SPEEDS WHICH ARE LIMITED BY THE TRANSPORTATION OF SUBSTRATES AND PRODUCTS THROUGH THE CONTAINMENT STRUCTURE. IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INVENTION, THIS DIFFICULTY IS SOLVED BY PLACING THE MICRO-ORGANISMS IN A PHASE 8TH DELIMED BY A 2E MEMBRANE WHOSE POROSITY IS JUST SUFFICIENT TO RETAIN THE MICRO-ORGANISMS, BUT WHICH IS PERMEABLE TO ALL SUBSTRATES OR PRODUCTS CONSUMED OR EXCESSED DURING THE ACTIVITY OF SAID MICRO-ORGANISMS.
