abstract THE INVENTION IS RELATED TO THE TREATMENT OF IRRADIED NUCLEAR FUEL TO SEPARATE URANIUM, PLUTONIUM, OTHER HIGHER ACTINIDES AND FISSION PRODUCTS. TREAT WITH NITRIC ACID TO DISSOLVE, THEN DO A SOLVENT EXTRACTION, BACKWASH, TETRA- AND HEXA- VALENT PLUTONIUM REDUCTION IN THE TRIVALENT FORM, THEN A SECOND SOLVENT EXTRACTION IN WHICH THE PLUTONIUM TRIVALENT REMAINS IN AQUEOUS PHASE WHILE URANIUM PASSES INTO THE SOLVENT PHASE; REDUCTION IS PERFORMED WITH HYDRAZINE WITH OR WITHOUT TETRAVALENT URANIUM NITRATE, WITH CATALYSIS BY TECHNETIUM IN TETRAVALENT FORM WITH OR WITHOUT TECHNETIUM UNDER ONE OR MORE HIGHER DEGREES OF VALENCIA. TECHNETIUM MAY RESULT FROM IRRADIATION OR BE ADDED IN A COMBINED FORM. APPLICATION: RECOVERY AND REGENERATION OF NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS.
