THE CORE CONTAINS A FIRST SET OF ZONES 1, 2 EXTENDING THROUGH ITS ENTIRE HEIGHT AND A FRACTION OF ITS CROSS-SECTION WHERE THE COMBUSTIBLE PENCILS MAINLY CONTAIN ENRICHED URANIUM OXIDE AND A SECOND SET OF ZONES 3 INTERLACED BETWEEN THE HEART ZONES 1, 2 OF THE FIRST SET WHERE THE PENCILS MAINLY CONTAIN PLUTONIUM. THE PENCILS IN ZONES 1, 2 OF THE FIRST SET EMIT NEUTRONS AND MAINTAIN NEUTRONIC REACTIONS. THE ENERGY SPECTRUM OF THE NEUTRONS IS IN THE THERMAL DOMAIN, IN ZONES 1, 2. THE PENCILS OF ZONES 3 OF THE SECOND SET ARE SPACED A SENSITIVELY LOWER DISTANCE THAN THE DISTANCE SEPARATING THE PENCILS FROM ZONES 1, 2 SO THAT THE NEUTRONS PRODUCED THERE ARE IN THE FIELD OF HIGH ENERGIES. THE INVENTION APPLIES, IN PARTICULAR, TO SPECTRUM VARIABLE NUCLEAR REACTORS.
