THE PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED CONSISTS OF ALLOWING THE OBTAINING OF A HIGH BIREFRINGENCE AND LOW DIELECTRIC ANISOTROPY. FOLLOWING THE INVENTION, THE MATERIAL INCLUDES A MIXTURE OF CYANOBIPHENYL COMPOUNDS: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) IN WHICH R REPRESENTS AN ALKYL GROUP WHICH MAY HAVE UP TO 10 CARBON ATOMS AND A STRAIGHT CHAIN; AND OF PHENYLCYCLOHEXANE COMPOUNDS: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) IN WHICH R REPRESENTS AN ALKYL GROUP WHICH MAY HAVE UP TO 10 CARBON ATOMS AND A STRAIGHT CHAIN; AND ESSENTIALLY NON-POLAR COMPOUNDS: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) IN WHICH N IS INCLUDED BETWEEN 1 AND 4, AND EACH OF THE R AND R GROUPS, WHICH MAY BE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT, REPRESENTS AN ALKYL GROUP THAT CAN HAVE UP TO 10 ATOMS OF CARBON AND STRAIGHT CHAIN. THE INVENTION FINDS AN ADVANTAGEOUS APPLICATION IN LIQUID CRYSTAL LIGHT MODULATORS PILOT BY ELECTRONIC BEAM AND INCLUDING A TWISTED NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL CELL.
