THE INVENTION RELATES TO A PROCESS FOR APPLYING A PROTECTIVE COATING TO A METAL SUBSTRATE, THIS COATING FORMING A THERMAL BARRIER AND A BARRIER AGAINST OXIDIZATION OF THE SUBSTRATE. COATING 11 CONSISTS OF A MIXTURE OF TWO METALS, FOR EXAMPLE CERIUM AND COBALT, ONE OF THESE METALS, FORMING AN OUTER LAYER 13, BEING EXPOSED TO AN ATMOSPHERE CONTAINING A LOW PARTIAL PRESSURE OF OXYGEN AND AT HIGH TEMPERATURE TO FORM A STABLE OXIDE, AND THE OTHER METAL NOT FORMING A STABLE OXIDE UNDER THESE CONDITIONS, BUT AN INNER LAYER 12 OF ALLOY WITH A SUBSTRATE COMPONENT.
