abstract | PROCESS FOR THE CATALYTIC PREPARATION OF ALKYLEN CARBONATES. ALKYLEN CARBONATES, IN PARTICULAR ETHYLENE CARBONATE, ARE PREPARED BY THE REACTION OF AN ALKYLENE OXIDE WITH CO IN THE PRESENCE OF A CATALYST, AT TEMPERATURES HIGHER THAN 20C, ESPECIALLY ABOVE 90C AND PREFERABLY LOCATED BETWEEN 90 AND 170C. ALKYLENE OXIDE CAN BE TRANSFORMED TO ALKYLENE CARBONATE IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER WHILE MINIMIZING THE INAPPROPRIATE HYDROLYSIS OF THE CARBONATE TO THE CORRESPONDING ALKYLENE GLYCOL AND BY INHIBITING THE FORMATION OF HIGHER GLYCOLS IN THE PRESENCE OF WATER, BY MAINTAINING THE RATIO. ALKYLENE IS AT LEAST 11, THE MOLAR WATER RATIO OF ALKYLENE IS MORE THAN 0.011 AND BY ADJUSTING THE PARTIAL CO PRESSURE TO A VALUE TO OBTAIN THE DESIRED SELECTIVITY OF ALKYLENE CARBONATE PRODUCTION. ALKYLEN CARBONATES CAN BE USED AS A SOLVENT OR AS A SOURCE OF THE CORRESPONDING GLYCOLS. |
