SAFETY MEANS FOR HIGH ENERGY DENSITY ELECTROCHEMICAL BATTERIES, AND BATTERIES OF THIS TYPE, INCLUDING AN ALKALINE OR ALKALINO-EARTH ELECTRODE WOUND IN A PROPELLER, A CURRENT COLLECTOR IN CARBON OR INERT METAL AND AN ELECTROLYTE OF NON-AQUEOUS COMPOUND OXYHALOGENIDE OR THIOHALOGENIDE SOLVENT IN WHICH A SOLUTE IS DISSOLVED. THESE MEANS OF SAFETY INCLUDE, IN COMBINATION, MECHANICAL MEANS OF EXTENSION AND A LIQUID OR GASEOUS ADDITIVE, COMPATIBLE WITH THE CONSTITUENTS OF THE BATTERY AND WHOSE PRESSURE INCREASES RAPIDLY WHEN THE TEMPERATURE OF THE BATTERY INCREASES. THE INVENTION PREVENTS THE EXPLOSION OF THE BATTERY UNDER ACCIDENTAL CONDITIONS OF INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL SHORT CIRCUIT AND INCINERATION. |
