THIS PROCESS IS CHARACTERIZED IN THAT: 1 THE PH OF THE LIQUID PHASE OF A CULTURE BROTH CONTAINING COPROPORPHYRINE AND UOPORPHYRINE IS ADJUSTED BETWEEN 2, 5 AND 4 TO FORM A SOLID PRECIPITE CONTAINING THESE TWO SUBSTANCES, PRECIPITATED BY L 'WE COLLECT; 2 A WATER-BASED ALKALINE SOLUTION OF THIS PRECIPITE IS PREPARED, THE PH OF WHICH IS ADJUSTED ABOVE 4 BUT NOT MORE THAN 6 TO FORM A SOLID PRECIPITE CONTAINING COPROPORPHYRINE, AND THIS PRECIPITE IS COLLECTED BETWEEN 1 AND 4 THE PH OF THE LIQUID WHICH REMAINS AFTER THIS PRECIPITE IS COLLECTED TO FORM A SOLID PRECIPITE CONTAINING UROPORPHYRINE, WHICH IS COLLECTED. THESE TWO PORPHYRINS HAVE MEDICAL APPLICATIONS, FOR EXAMPLE TO IMPROVE HEPATIC FUNCTION.
