abstract The invention relates to voltage and electric field measuring devices using light as a parameter. A light source 1, a polarizer 2, an electro-optical crystal 7, a quarter-wave plate 6, and a polarization analyzer 5 are arranged in this order according to the direction of movement of the applied light, which is received by a receiver 10 under an average power Pav. A voltage 6 can be applied to the electro-optical crystal through electrodes. The crystal belongs to the cubic system, and is for example formed of an oxide of bismuth and silicon such as Bi12SiO20 and Bi4Si3O12, or of an oxide of bismuth and germanium such as Bi12GeO20 and Bi4Ge3O12.
