THE PROCESS FOR MANUFACTURING THE GAS DETECTOR ELEMENT CONSISTS OF PLACING ON A FILAMENT 1 A SLURRY CONTAINING ALUMINA THEN REMOVING THE LIQUID FROM THE BOIL TO LEAVE A PEARL SURROUNDING THE FILAMENT 1. THE BOIL IS FORMED BY A MIXTURE D 'ALUMINA AND AT LEAST ONE CATALYST PRECURSOR IN A PRACTICALLY NON-AQUEOUS ORGANIC LIQUID. AT LEAST ONE CATALYST PRECURSOR IS DECOMPOSED, FILAMENT 1 IS SURROUNDED BY A PEARL INCLUDING A BEAM OF ALUMINA PARTICLES ARRANGED BETWEEN, AND CONNECTED ONLY BY, PARTICLES OF A CATALYST TO INDUCE THE CATALYTIC OXIDATION OF THE GAS FORM AN OPEN POROUS SKELETAL MATRIX ALLOWING THE DIFFUSION OF GASES HAVING AN AVERAGE PARTICULAR SIZE LESS THAN 20NM. THE FILAMENT CONDUCTORS, CONNECTED BETWEEN THE SUPPORT RODS 5, ARE CURVED IN SINUOSITY 4 AND ANCED BEFORE THE BOIL IS DEPOSITED ON THE FILAMENT 1.
