abstract | The invention relates to a process for preparing anhydrides of carboxylic acids. Said process consists in preparing such an anhydride, from a carboxylic ester or a hydrocarbyl ether by carbonylation, using a halide, carbon monoxide and a noble metal of group VIII in the presence of a promoter comprising in least one metal of group VIB and one arsine of formula: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) in which R and R ** 1 are monocyclic aryl groups or alkyl groups and R ** 2 is the radical: (CF DRAWING IN BOPI) a monocyclic aryl group or an alkyl group, R ** 3 and R ** 4 each representing a monocyclic aryl group or an alkyl group, provided that at least one of the groups R, R ** 1 and R ** 2 or a monocyclic aryl group, n being zero or a number from 1 to 20.
