THE CRUDE TEREPHTHALIC ACID OBTAINED BY OXIDATION OF P-TOLUALDEHYDE IN THE LIQUID PHASE IS PURIFIED WITH MOLECULAR OXYGEN IN THE PRESENCE OF A BROMINE COMPOUND AS A CATALYST, USING WATER AS A SOLVENT, BY DISSOLUTION OF CRUDE ACID IN WATER, HYDROGENATION OF THE AQUEOUS SOLUTION WITH MOLECULAR HYDROGEN IN THE PRESENCE OF A HYDROGENATION CATALYST AND RECRISTALLIZATION OF THE TEREPHTHALIC ACID COMING FROM THE AQUEOUS HYDROGENATED SOLUTION, AND ADDED, BEFORE HYDROGENATION, ALKALINE MATERIAL WITH TEREPHTHALIC ACID SOLUTION TO PURIFY. PURIFIED TEREPHTHALIC ACID HAS A VERY LOW CONTENT OF 4-CARBOXYBENZALDEHYDE AND THE ACTIVITY OF THE HYDROGENATION CATALYST IS NOT REDUCED BY ADDITION OF THE ALKALINE MATERIAL. |
