abstract | THE PRESENT INVENTION CONCERNS A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ALPHA-NAPHTOL WHICH CONSISTS OF SULPHURING NAPHTHALENE WITH AN EQUIMOLAR QUANTITY OF SULFURIC ACID CONCENTRATED AT A TEMPERATURE OF 30 TO 85C FOR 60 TO 120 MINUTES IN THE PRESENCE OF ANHYDRIDE UTILIZED ACETIC FROM 0.5 TO 1.5 MOLE PER MOLE OF NAPHTHALENE, THEN TO FUSION THE NAPHTHALENE-A-SULFO-ACID, AT A TEMPERATURE OF 180 TO 285C, FOR 10 TO 30 MINUTES WITH AN ALKALI USED AT 3 A 4 MOLES OF ALKALI PER MOLE OF NAPHTHALENE-A-SULFO-ACID, TO MIX THE FUSION PRODUCT CONSISTING OF ALPHA-NAPHTHOLATE OF ALKALINE METAL AND OF ALKALINE METAL SULPHITE WITH A POLAR SOLVENT, TO ACIDIFY THE MIXTURE OBTAINED BY A MINERAL ACID USED IN AN QUANTITY EQUIVALENT TO THE QUANTITY OF ALPHA-NAPHTOLATE OF METAL ALKALINE, AND TO ISOLATE FROM THE SUSPENSION OBTAINED THE ALPHA-NAPHTOL. ALPHA-NAPHTOL FINDS APPLICATIONS IN THE PRODUCTION OF VERY EFFECTIVE AGAINST NOCTUAL INSECTICIDES, ESPECIALLY N-METHYLCARBAMIC ACID ALPHA-NAPHTHYL ESTER, AS WELL AS IN THE MANUFACTURE OF AZOIC COLORANTS. IN ADDITION, ALPHA-NAPHTOL IS AN EFFECTIVE ANTI-OXIDANT ADDED TO MINERAL AND VEGETABLE OILS. |
