abstract According to the process shown diagrammatically in FIG. 2, a thermoplastic paste is extruded at 12, water vapor 22 is injected into the extruded product when it leaves the extruder and then the extruded and the water vapor are mixed at 24 to condense part of the water vapor so as to raise the water content and the temperature of the extrudate before collecting it at 50. The injection and mixing are carried out in a closed transfer means 20. It is therefore not necessary that the product as extruded air the water content and the temperature necessary to form the final product since they will be adjusted by injection of steam. The product to be extruded can therefore be more viscous, which increases the speed of extrusion.
