titleOfInvention | PROCESS FOR PREPARING BENZENE-CARBOXYLIC ACIDS |
abstract | Process for the preparation of benzene-carboxylic acids by oxidation of substituted benzene compounds. An aromatic compound, such as p-xylene, p-toluic acid and methyl p-toluate, is oxidized with a gas containing molecular oxygen, in the liquid phase, substantially in the absence of 'a lower aliphatic carboxylic acid, using a catalyst consisting of a cobalt compound soluble in the reaction system, a manganese compound soluble in the reaction system, a bromine compound soluble in the reaction system and, optionally , an alkali metal compound soluble in the reaction system. It is thus possible to prepare, from p-xylene and / or methyl p-toluate, terephthalic acid, an important raw material for the preparation of polyesters. |
