titleOfInvention PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF N-PHOSPHINYLMETHYLGLYCINE COMPOUNDS AND NEW PRODUCTS THEREFORE OBTAINED, USEFUL AS AN INTERMEDIATE FOR HERBICIDES
abstract Process for the preparation of N-phosphinylmethylglycine compound and new products thus obtained. These compounds have the formula: where M is hydrogen or a cation and M1 is hydrogen or an alkali metal cation, which consists of forming a mixture of an N-phosphinylmethylminodiacetic acid having the formula: where M and M1 are as defined above, with water and an activated carbon catalyst containing 300 to 700 parts per million of iron, rhodium on activated carbon or on alumina, maintaining this mixture between 15 and 45 C and contacting the mixture with a gas containing free oxygen. The present invention which is an intermediate in the production of N-phosphonomethylglycine employed as a herbicide.
