abstract | Gasoline containing tertiaryamyl methyl ether is prepared by (1) separating from a mixture of hydrocarbons a portion of olephinic hydrocarbons having predominantly 5 carbon atoms including 2-methyl butenes (2) catalytically reacting the hydrocarbon portion with methanol to etherify at least some of the 2-methyl butene, (3) fractionally distilling under reflux at least a proportion of the effluent stream from the catalytic reaction, a bottom fraction containing a major proportion of the ethers being withdrawn from the bottom of the distillation column and a distillate fraction being withdrawn from the top of the distillation column, (4) blending the bottom fraction and any remainder of the effluent stream from the catalytic reaction with gasoline and (5) recycling a proportion of the distillate fraction to the catalytic reaction, a proportion of the distillate fraction also being blended with the gasoline when the entire effluent from the catalytic reaction is passed to the fractional distillation. o |
