The invention relates to the recovery of methacrolein from a gas mixture obtained by catalytic oxidation of isobutylene. A gas mixture containing methacrolein, isobutylene, O 2, N2, CO2 and other inert gases is treated with a liquid mass of acetic acid, so as to selectively absorb the methacrolein in a washing tower. The acetic acid which has absorbed the methacrolein is subjected to fractional distillation to recover the methacrolein. Upon oxidation, methacrolein can give methacrylic acid which is an intermediate in the production of polymers. |
