titleOfInvention HYDROGENATION OF UNSATURATED CYCLIC COMPOUNDS
abstract A process for the hydrogenation, with elemental hydrogen gas in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and under hydrogenadon conditions, of a cyclic unsaturated compound having a hydroxyl group attached to an asymmetric center of the ring and a double bond carbon-carbon olefin which when saturated in the hydrogenation process creates an additional center of asymmetry in the ring, characterized in that an increased stereoselectivity is obtained by increasing the addition of said hydrogen on the side of the olefinic bond which corresponds to the side of the compound molecule comprising said hydroxyl group, by carrying out said hydrogenation with a hydrogenation catalyst containing nickel of which a substantial fraction of the reactive surfaces has been inactivated. The invention is particularly applicable to the hydrogenation of d-trans-piperitol to d-isomenthol which can easily be isomerized to 1-menthol which is a product having many applications.
