BLOOD CONSERVATION SYSTEM |
abstract |
Disclosed is an improved blood preservation system comprising metabolizing erythrocytes in an in vitro medium capable of supporting erythrocyte metabolism. The system according to the invention comprises physically separable means for providing a physiologically acceptable continuous source for the sustained release of metabolizable phosphate for said erythrocytes, in an amount sufficient to maintain both 2,3-DPG and ATP contents equal to those of freshly drawn blood for a storage period equivalent to 28 days at 4 degrees C. |
