abstract Amphoteric polyelectrolytes and their preparation process. These amphoteric electrolyte products can be prepared by copolymerizing a cationic vinyl monomer, such as beta-methacryloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride, an anionic vinyl monomer, such as acrylic acid, and a vinyl monomer such as acrylamide, optionally with a vinyl monomer. nonionic such as acrylonitrile, in a solvent in the presence of a catalyst. The present invention is particularly useful for providing amphoteric polyelectrolytes, employed as paper additives, capable of imparting dry strength to paper, as flocculants and as high molecular weight dehydrating agents.
