The present invention relates to self-extinguishing polymeric compositions. According to the invention, they comprise, for 100 parts of a thermoplastic polymer as such or containing inert fillers and/or other additives: 1. from 5 to 30 parts of an ammonium or amine phosphate; and 2. from 3 to 20 parts of one or more nitrogen-containing organic compounds which, on heating in the presence of component 1, decompose with the formation of a carbonaceous non-flowing mass, these compounds containing nitrogen being chosen from: a. reaction products of aliphatic or aromatic diisocyanates or triisocyanates with organic compounds having reactive hydrogen atoms in the molecule; b. a mixture of component a and/or an aldehyde/amine or aldehyde/urea reaction product with a nitrogen-containing compound having the group -CONH(CH2)n -, where n is an integer having a value of at least 1; etc. a mixture of an amine with a nitrogen-containing compound having the group -CONH(CH2 )n -, where n has the above meaning. The invention applies in particular to olefins such as polypropylene, polyethylene, ethylene-propylene copolymers and other polymers. |
