abstract To prepare 3-halosulfonyl-thiofenecarboxylic acids and derivatives of formula I, a 3-ketothiofan-carboxylic acid or derivative of formula II is reacted, in a first operating stage, with a sulfonic acid or derivative of formula III, this which gives a 3-sulfato-dihydrothiofen-carboxylic acid or derivative corresponding to one of the formulas IVa and IVb, which is reacted in a second operating stage with an alkali polysulfide, the reaction giving an acid polysulfide 3,3 '-bis- (dihydrothiofen-carboxylic acid) or derivative corresponding to one of the formulas Va and Vb, which is reacted in a third operating stage with a chloride or bromide of sulfuric acid or with chlorine, the reaction giving polysulfides of 3,3'-bis- (thiofenecarboxylic acids) or derivatives corresponding to one of the formulas VIa and VIb, which are reacted in a fourth stage of operation with a halogen and water. The thiofen derivatives thus prepared are used in the preparation of medicaments, sweeteners and phyto-sanitary products.
