abstract The invention relates to the production of 3 ', 4'-dideoxykanamycin B. The process comprises reacting a protected derivative of 3'-4'-dideoxy-3'-eno-kanamycin B with an alkali or alkaline earth metal in presence of liquid ammonia to remove the protective magnifiers, then reacting 3 ', 4' deoxy-3'-eno-kanamycin B with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to hydrogenate the unsaturated bond in 3 ', 4' and to thereby produce 3 ', 4'-dideoxykanamycin B. 3', 4'-dideoxykanamycin B is a semi-synthetic antibiotic endowed with high antibacterial activity.
