abstract The invention relates to a method of sterilizing an artificial kidney comprising a container in which are housed hollow fibers with selective permeability and comprising inlet and outlet ports for blood, as well as for a dialysate According to the invention, at. said artificial kidney is filled with a priming liquid consisting of water or an aqueous solution, b. at least one of the inlet and outlet ports is connected to a pneumatic buffer receptacle, that is to say a damper for pressure variations, c. the remaining openings are sealed with plugs, d. said artificial kidney is heated to a temperature of between 80 and 130 degrees C to sterilize it by heat and the gases and a part of said priming liquid of the artificial kidney, which have dilated by heating, are entrained in the buffer vessel, e. the artificial kidney is cooled to return the priming liquid contained in the buffer vessel to the artificial kidney, and f. the orifice connected to the buffer vessel is aseptically closed.
