abstract The invention relates to a protected, lysable blood composition. A preservative consisting of an aqueous mixture of a mono-, di- or trisaccharide and formaldehyde is used to protect the blood. The invention is particularly applicable to the prolonged preservation of whole blood samples for the differential counting of leukocytes with an automatic continuous flow analysis apparatus.
