abstract The invention relates to a tobacco substitute. The smoking substance of the invention is obtained from regenerated cellulose viscose containing TiO2 and activated carbon. From a spinning bath 1, a strand 2 of corrugated fibers is drawn. At 3, the latter is cut into strands which are carded at 5. The strip 6 thus formed passes through a bath 8 of combustion modifying agent and into an air dryer 10, then passes through a pyrolysis oven II with a profile of temperature. The pyrolyzed strand passes through other baths 12 and 16 and other dryers 14 and 18 to receive other agents (smoke producer, nicotine stimulant, flavoring) to be transformed into filter-tipped cigarettes 23 by conventional machines 20 and 22. The smoking material does not emit any toxic combustion products and, in its hardness and pressure drop, is similar to regular cigarettes.
